Ideal routine for a puppy during the first 3 months
Partager
Bringing a puppy home (usually around 8 weeks old) is a wonderful yet demanding milestone. The weeks from 2 to 4 months constitute the critical socialization period: what he learns during this phase will shape his adult character.
1. House training
A 2-month-old puppy does not yet have physiological control over its sphincters.
-
The golden rule: Take him out systematically every 2 hours, as well as after every meal, nap, and play session.
-
Patience and praise: As soon as he relieves himself outside, praise him warmly with a happy voice and a treat. If he has an accident inside, do not punish him and do not rub his nose in it (an obsolete and anxiety-inducing method). Clean it up out of his sight using white vinegar or an enzymatic cleaner (avoid bleach, which encourages him to repeat the behavior).
2. Positive socialization
Introduce him to the outside world without traumatizing him:
-
Expose him to various noises (vacuum cleaner, traffic, thunderstorms), people of different ages and appearances, and calm, well-socialized adult dogs.
-
Each new experience must be associated with a positive emotion (play or a treat).
3. Habituation to being alone
Do not wait until the end of your vacation to leave your puppy alone. From the second week, start leaving the room for a few minutes while leaving him with a chew toy to keep him occupied. Gradually increase the duration without making a big deal out of leaving or being overly effusive upon your return.
